How Our Handmade Sheepskin Are Made

Our sheepskins are made an old fashion way that takes time and patience made entirely by hand tools using natural ingredients.

We start our process by cutting off all the meat and fat from the skin. We give a simple wash

Growing the preserving extracts

Sourcing Our Tannins

Bark tanning utilizes the preserving properties of plant extracts high in tannic acid, the same compound found in black tea that has a bitter astringent taste. Our preserving agent is nothing more than really, really strong tea. Some people even taste a little to see if the recipe is right! (That is if you can handle the taste that makes your face pucker.)

We try our best to source tannins from our own land to keep our impact local. We harvest sumac from our fields and use discarded willow from our basket willow harvest. When we cannot supply our own tannins, we purchase mimosa to substitute.

Saving hides from landfills

Our Source of Sheepskins

We are saving animal skin byproducts from going to waste. These skins would not be used since most small farmers use the meat and toss the skin. We understand some may find the loss of animals upsetting. Animals are never harvested only for their hides, local homesteading families and farmers raise sheep for meat. We take what is left by the farmer at the meat processors. If animals are to be killed for us to live, we believe it pays respect to try to use the whole animal.
